Homestyle Direct

Homestyle Direct Reviews - Prepared Meal Delivery Reviews

We feel this is one of the worst prepared meal delivery services you could choose. In June 2018, this company settled a lawsuit accusing them of Medicaid Fraud. The company denies any wrongdoing but still paid $357,125 to settle the charges of illegally billing Medicaid for $888,152.

Homestyle Direct (HSD) is a prepared meal delivery service that is qualified for Medicaid and other agency programs, but they also have a Private Pay program for shipping nationwide. To qualify for these services, their meal prices have to be low, and they are. Ours cost $7 each.

Based on all the prepared meal delivery services we've reviewed, this one is one of the worst. Our $7 cost per meal doubled to $16.80 when we take into consideration of meals thrown away from food safety issues from broken seals and excessive water damaged meals from single compartment trays. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and enjoy better, and sometimes safer, food quality. Seniors and family caretakers can read Craig Caldwell's comments by visiting Homestyle Direct Reviews at Senior-Meals.org

Meals from Our 2018 Homestyle Direct Review

Ham, Egg & Cheese Croissant Sandwich
Ham, Egg & Cheese Croissant Sandwich - $7

You can find this Ham, Egg & Cheese Croissant Sandwich at most gas stations or convenience stores on your way to work in the morning, and it won't cost near $7. It will probably cost closer $2. Add a bag of dried fruit, and a lightly sauteed sliced potato and you have this meal.

It's a good value, at a gas station, but our expectations for culinary expertise is higher for a senior citizen prepared meal delivery service, and especially one that has Medicaid contracts. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Old Fashion Meatloaf - $7
Old Fashion Meatloaf - $7

While you are at the gas station, take a step to the right, and you'll be likely to find some frozen hamburgers or meatloaf sandwiches. They are made from same machine-made, processed meat as this "Old Fashioned" Meatloaf. You'll see the same potatoes in many of these meals. We thought the vegetable effort of quality and portion size was better than what we sampled in recent years, but the only thing "old" about this meatloaf could be how long it's been on the shelf.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Honey Bourbon BBQ Beef
Honey Bourbon BBQ Beef - $7

This meal was thrown away due to water damage from excessive water in the single compartment tray. If there was any honey or bourbon flavor in the BBQ beef, it was washed away. You can't see it in the picture, but there is a pile of mushy mashed potatoes under the BBQ Beef. The amount of beef in this meal is much smaller than how it looks. Think of the meat being sprinkled on the mashed potatoes.

The cornbread was the best thing in the meal, and it was prepackaged from another supplier. A green vegetable would have helped make this a balanced meal, but given the poor quality, I don't think anyone would care, primarily the company that sells it. How embarrassing. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Boneless Fried Chicken Dinner - $7
Boneless Fried Chicken Dinner - $7

We really and sincerely hope this is the direction the company is headed with their prepared meal delivery service. The breaded chicken cutlet is larger and meatier than most, but I salute the company for using fresh asparagus, not canned or frozen. Along with the fresh potatoes and the small biscuit, this would be a meal any elderly or senior person would appreciate tremendously.

Here is a meal that is an excellent value at $7 and you probably won't find something better in the frozen food section of your local market.

Chicken Cordon Bleu
Chicken Cordon Bleu - $7

This meal would have received a position, thumbs up review from us had it adequately been shipped in multiple compartment trays. The Chicken Cordon Blue is good, as is the flavorful cheese inside it. The Mashed and Potatoes and Peas were also above average. However, the single compartment tray reduced this meal to a clump of mush that was difficult to separate.

Click the image for the enlarged view, and you can still see how we couldn't get some of the Mashed Potato-Pea mush detached from the bottom of the chicken. Once again, the arrogance of insisting on using a sing compartment tray ruins the meal. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Country Fried Steak Fritter Breakfast
Country Fried Steak Fritter Breakfast - $7

Had the scrambled eggs been in their own compartment tray, and the potatoes in there, and the Chicken Fried Steak with its gravy in its own compartment the consumer or the person receiving this through Medicaid would have been able to enjoy a pretty decent breakfast with good flavor and generous portion size.

Instead, the gravy made everything a giant clump of unappetizing mass that literally took us 20 minutes to separate and make this plate. Plating is more like scrapping a plate into a dog's dish than an actual plate you would serve yourself or a family member. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Nicole DiLayne
Peaches and Cream Whole Grain Pancakes
Peaches and Cream Whole Grain Pancakes - $7

Here is the actual presentation Homestyle makes when you open your pancake breakfast meal. The only word to describe putting whipped cream and diced peaches in the same compartment as pancakes is "STUPID." Of course, the pancake will absorb all the cream and juice from the peaches when it is microwaved, making it soggy and mushy.

I stand corrected, there might be another word: "WE DON'T CARE." Almost every prepared meal delivery service that serves breakfast serves pancakes. Homestyle is the only service to get a thumbs down for a dish as simple as pancakes. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Grammy's Beef Goulash
Grammy's Beef Goulash - $7

No Grandmother would accept responsibility for this tasteless water damaged mess. We feel sorry for the Medicaid recipient who may not have eaten for 12 hours, or more, and visually experiences this meal just like you are when they opened it. We threw ours out, but some people had to eat it or eat nothing at all.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

-Morris Pelphner
Shredded Beef Fajita
Shredded Beef Fajita - $7

This was another water damaged meal. We did our best to strain the Fajita components from the single compartment tray. Ironically, the seal on this meal was broken during shipping, so the excessive water came from the food in the meal when we reheated it. As you can probably imagine, the water-logged Fajita's wouldn't hold any filling. For food safety reasons we threw this meal out.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Nicole DiLayne
Tavern Battered Fish and Chips
Tavern Battered Fish and Chips - $7

This meal almost got ruined by being in a sing compartment tray. The Battered Fish was a little bit soggy, but we were able to lift it from the tray to the plate without it breaking. What a shame we have to experience this with every meal we receive.

The fish was very good, and three of them was a surprise. We probably should make a bigger deal about the same potatoes being in almost every meal, and the carrots should have been a green vegetable to be a balanced meal, but the fish was excellent.
-Morris Pelphner
Southwest Rice and Bean Bowl
Southwest Rice and Bean Bowl - $7

This was another meal we threw away for food safety reasons because the seals on the microwave tray was broken. There was an unidentifiable odor from the tray too. It wasn't strong, but it was there. We had the luxury of throwing this meal away which made us wonders how many people on Medicaid had to eat this or eat nothing. It also made us wonder if Medicaid has any quality control standards, or does periodic surprise inspections to make sure the food these people are counting on is okay to eat.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Nicole DiLayne
Homestyle Macaroni and Cheese
Homestyle Macaroni and Cheese - $7

You can see the water damage at the bottom of the plate, and while it's not substantial, it is enough to dilute the cheese sauce to a flavorless disappointment. Once again, not putting the vegetables in its own compartment ruined this meal.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Chef Aldo Piquanti
Beef Yankee Pot Roast
Beef Yankee Pot Roast - $7

Being "Yankees," we are all quite familiar with tender cuts of Yankee Pot Roast in a thick rich gravy. One would think it should be an intellectual property violation for HSD to be allowed to call this prepared meal Yankee Pot Roast because the name is the only thing similar to the real dish.

Ours didn't come with rich flavorful gravy. Instead, and as you can see in the closeup of the picture, our came with extra water that drowned out any flavor that may have been there and made both the mashed potatoes and the bread so soggy it was inedible. In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Morris Pelphner
Philly Beef Noodle Bake - $7
Philly Beef Noodle Bake - $7

One of the great things about living so close to Philadelphia is driving down to the Foodery and having a classic Roast Pork Sandwich for lunch and then over to Geno's or Pat's Steaks for a Philly Cheesesteak for dinner. It doesn't get much better than that. This meal couldn't get any worse. I assume they call it "Philly" because it has some chopped beef, which of course is not Ribeye. See that puddle of water at the bottom of the plate? Note: For those of you who love culinary horror movies you click on the picture and see the closeup. All that excess water from the frozen vegetables melting in a single compartment tray ruined this meal and made it inedible.  In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Homestyle Cheeseburger - $7
Homestyle Cheeseburger - $7

One of the great culinary meals America gave the world is the Cheeseburger and Fries. Sure, America may not have created it, but you perfected it. So much so, it's showing up on menus all through Europe, and a lot of the world. Then we have this offering. I guess I'll start by noting this meal didn't have any water damage, but if I am going to eat 18 grams of fat and 59 carbs, I won't expose my body to this gas station food. The "meat" highly processed and the bun reheated to be inedible.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.
-Chef Aldo Piquanti
Breaded Chicken Fried Steak - $7
Breaded Chicken Fried Steak - $7

Growing up in my family, gravy was considered a beverage. Here, the gravy is baked right into the breading of the chicken. I am not even sure I can call it chicken breast because the patty is made from "chopped chicken," although pureed might be closed to actuality. I think it's suspicious this meal comes with margarine and there are no trans fats listed on the nutritional label. There is really nothing desirable here.

In our opinion, you can probably get two or three frozen dinners at the supermarket for the same price and much better quality then this meal.

Chef Piquanti's Review of Homestyle Direct Meal Delivery Service

The Chicken Ala King was good, and the portion size was plentiful. I also thought the Ground Beef Stroganoff was a good value at $5.95 per meal. The Bacon and Cheese Omelet with Hash Browns and a Bagel might have been the best of the meals I personally purchased and tried from this company.

Most of the meals I tried were bland from lack of seasoning, but I could be fixed with a salt-and-pepper shaker. I would not consider any of these meals gourmet, of high quality, or created with any level of culinary skill. In my opinion, they are an inexpensive solution to feed senior citizens that may not have the means to feed themselves financially, and perhaps slightly better than supermarket TV dinners.

Homestyle Direct Meals Made Me Sick Three Times

Home style direct meals have made me sick three times. HomestyleDirect2XMonth's chicken and shredded turkey is perhaps 20% fat and gristle. Homestyle Direct fish is likely 50% bread and 50% fish. Homestyle Direct has no option that actually provides seniors with actual fish or chicken. Home style DIRECTV does not provide many vegetables – I need to eat vegetables. I've tried for six months to get another delivery service, but Aware-Inc. in Montana must have some sort of special under-the-table deal. Aware-Inc. will not allow me to switch, although this company and their food make me sick. I shudder when I think of each order being delivered again. Help. Please help.

Would Prefer Separate Food Compartments

Would have been a lot better if they had different compartments for the items so a lot of water and juice from the other things wouldn't run under the rolls and meat. I also found a lot of the things were still frozen when I took them out of the oven, was very upsetting, I had no idea you was suppose to take all the meals out to defrost first cause it said (could be heated in the frozen state). It all would be nice if you could fix some meals without the red or green peppers and the onions because some of the seniors have stomachs that can't tolerate the taste (I end up sick the rest of the day). It was very hard to remove the pats of butter before you put it in the oven when it is froze to the top 0f the meat. sorry I had no idea I was suppose to take pictures.

Prepared Meals for People on Low Budgets

Overall: Bronze Medal
  • Website Ease of Ordering: Good
  • Reheating: Fair
  • Customer Service: Excellent
  • Shipping: Fair
  • Taste and Food Quality: Fair
  • Value: Fair
Overall I found the meals I sampled on the menu to be okay, and a little behind the other vendors in this market. Having to allow time for the meals to defrost is an inconvenience, and shipping costs are more than most other services. The cost of the meals may make this company a good value for people with very low budgets.

Biscuit and Gravy Breakfast
One of my favorite things about traveling to the South is to load up on biscuits and gravy. This was a great experience. The sauce is loaded with sausage chunks, the sauce is not watery like you might expect with a microwave meal, and there is a traditional “kick” of Southern spices. Perhaps a biscuit on the side would make this perfect, but I scarfed the whole thing down. Excellent.

Direct Hamburger Meal
The microwaved Tater Tots were soggy. I was surprised to find a ketchup and mustard package under the Tater Tots, which probably should have been removed before cooking. The burger was a bad a burger could be, with the exception I was able to pick it up. The bread didn’t reheat evenly top and bottom and side to side. Some parts of the bun were to hard I couldn’t bit it. Overall, a disappointing meal.

Stuffed Pepper Meal
This stuffed pepper is not really stuffed. The meat, which has traditional rice in it, sits on a bed of rice. The pepper wedge is located right next to it. The rice had a crunchy, uncooked, texture to it. The meat and pepper is good, but there is very little sauce. The side vegetables were nothing special and a little mushy. Overall, an okay meal.
Consumer Supplied HomeStyle Direct Meal Pictures
Beef Burgundy Meal
The meat in this meal seems very “processed,” and unlike the meat of the stuffed pepper. It reminds me a microwave meat sandwich you might find at a gas station. Under the meat is a generous bed of pasta with a nice sauce. This was the best part of the meal, but the sauce seemed more like a pasta sauce than a beef burgundy sauce. The vegetables were good and not soggy. They had a healthy “crunch” to them. The quality of the beef made this meal disappointing.

Harvest Breakfast Meal
Wow! A very nice piece of skirt steak is the highlight of this meal. It microwaved well, wasn't overcooked, and was quite tasty. The juice from the steak, however, leaked into the potatoes and the scrambled eggs underneath it. The potatoes were slightly “crunchy” undercooked and had little seasoning. The scrambled eggs appeared to be powered, but the apples slices were great. A tray with compartments would have greatly helped this meal, but the steak makes this meal a star.

Pork Loin Meal
The little piece of paper you see in the tray is the leftover of a pat of butter covering the beans. It melted during reheating. The directions did not say to remove the film and remove it. There is one slice of pork tenderloin, which is a real slice of a true pork tenderloin. It came out perfect. The rest of the meal didn’t fare so well. There was a lot of excess water in the bottom of the tray from the vegetables, which ruined the stuffing. Again, compartment trays would probably help.

Jumbo Cheese Ravioli
Basically, this is three ravioli with standard vegetables. The meal was okay, but there was nothing special about it that you couldn’t buy at the supermarket. This meal seemed on the small scale for portion size. Most of their meals do provide a substantial portion. Although the tray was hot, both components seemed undercooked. Okay meal.
